Local History Groups

We have three groups: our Monday group, led by Sheila Wilson, meets on alternate weeks, as does our Friday group but they also take a bus trip out once a month to places of interest. This year they have enjoyed free entry to local National Trust properties including Wallington, Cragside, Gibside and Cherryburn.

These groups are very popular but if you are interested in joining one of them please let us know as we could put your name on a waiting list. It is a fun way to learn, make friends and also to get some fresh air and exercise.

West End Local History Group

Search runs a vibrant local history group at the West End Library on Condercum Road. this takes place once a month, usually on the third Monday at 1pm.

Recent topics have included a slide show and talk about the growth of Newcastle by local historian Alan Morgan and a film show by the Discovery Museum's Culture Shock project which works with local older people to create their own stories using memories and photos.

The meeting on Monday 18th April at 1pm will have an illustrated talk about the great plague of Newcastle which killed over 7,000 residents of the city.

On Monday 16th May there will be an illustrated talk called 'Men's Lives' - 'Work and Play'. Everyone is welcome to come to these events. Refreshments provided. Contact Search for more information on future events.
